At your business

As a business owner, you can take many of the same basic steps as homeowners to reduce your polluted runoff contribution. In addition, you may or may not be subject to regulation under the federal Clean Water Act regarding runoff from industrial activities, parking areas, construction sites, etc.

Do this today:

• Know the runoff regulations that affect your business. In California, visit the State Water Resources Control Board or your city for information on regulations and programs.
• Many industry-specific resources exist to help you handle your runoff and storm water properly.
• Carefully check your materials handling areas. Are all containers properly sealed and free from leaks? Are the chemicals stored in a clean, dry place? If you have any piles of materials, are they protected from rain and runoff?
• Use Integrated Pest Management practices to handle your pest problems

Do this over time:

• Take advantage of programs and information that allow you to choose the best management practices for your business and the materials you use. Visit the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board, Cal EPA or your city to see what low- or no-cost programs are available for you.
